Invalid Data,Abort Printing

By teklon ·
On a Compaq 166mmx Deskpro,Win 95,I have tried to install an Hp printer and I get a message stating invalid data, abort print. Then the setup software for the printer will not recognize the LPT1 port,no matter how many times I remove the port and reinstall it.There have been other printers on this machine but I have uninstalled them.

What HP Printer? Are you using the default Windows Printer Drivers or have you downloaded the latest and greatest from www.hp.com?

Hp840c,I am using the drivers for the printer, also downloaded driver from HP.Technical support at Hp seems to think it is something to do with my parallel port not functioning correctly.

If you think it's the parallel port, try deleting it from the system devices, then reboot and see if Windows will rediscover it.

I tried removing the port and it did not help. I finally found that is was a conflict of the Lexmark software from previous printer instalation still grabbing the parallell port even though software had been uninstalled .I had to get information from Lexmark on removing all the files left behind from a normal uninstall,I was surprised to see so many registry entries still there. Thanks for your Answer.
