IP Status

By Giacomo ·
I just installed Linux Mandrake 8.1 and can't get the network to work. I have a dhcp already running on my network so I configured my network card for dhcp. It doesn't seem to be working and I can't check my ip status anywhere. Is there some sort ofcommand (eq: ipconfig) that would tell me exactly if I got the ip from dhcp or not.
Please help?

tks in advance

Giacomo

In RedHat distributions, and most other linuxes, there is a command, 'ifconfig' that will give you the configuration information from your Interfaces. This will tell you your current IP address, and such.

the command that shows your network status is

/sbin/ifconfig (but you've to be root to execute it...) but it doesn't say if you leased your ip from a DHCP server or not... it tells only the configuration of your network interface(s)

try to disable your network interface and then re-enable it with the following command (as root):

ifconfig eth0 up dhcp

or

ifconfig eth0 up --dynamic

bye.

I am only familiar with RedHat, but this may be the same with Mandrake. In Redhat there is the /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 file. CAT it out and look for the BOOTPROTO line. It should tell you either the static IP address or if you are pulling from DHCP it will say BOOTPROTO=dhcp.

Note: If you have more then one network card in your system it is possible you will have ifcfg-eth0, ifcfg-eth1, etc. for as many network cards that you have.
