Is there a valid reason I should use hard disk partitioning for my gamingPC

    by garloom26 ·

I own a gaming PC and in my IT class I have learned about hard disk partitioning. I was wondering if for my gaming PC which I also use for music production, is it worth it to configure disk partitioning and making volumes.

I don’t think there’s a valid reason. Using 2 desktops (one for gaming, one for music production) might make more sense. There’s hardly ever a good reason I think. What did they teach about that in your IT class?

They basically just taught me how to do it, and some reasons why. I didn’t really pay too much attention. But it’s just a whole thing from CompTIA that’s slightly outdated. Thanks for the information though I really appreciate it. I might set up the multiple desktop idea though because I honestly didn’t know I could even do that.

From my experience, disk partitioning is pretty much a thing of the past and no longer needed. As memory/storage has gotten so cheap, there is little need for partitioning any longer, especially with SSD storage. If you want to you can do so, just not commonly done any longer.

I no longer see this done.

Little payoff for invested effort. Used to be a thing over a decade ago.

Yes, disk partitioning can be helpful for your gaming PC, especially since you also use it for music production. It helps keep your system organized by separating games, music files, and the OS. This can improve performance, make backups easier, and protect your files if you ever need to reinstall the OS. Plus, if you ever want to run multiple operating systems, partitioning makes that simple too.

Folk that use partitions over directories tend to lose it all on OS changes and find it more work to back and restore.

Given we can organize files using folders the partition method is long dead.

Yet there’s a lot of old advice left over from the Windows 98 days.
