ISDN or CABELmodem and Linux

By rbiese ·
Hi all, yes I know there is little chance to find an internal ISDN card that will be supported by any flavour of Linux.
But will be there a Version of USB support in the Linux space?
Or frankly is there a ISDN or Cablemodem
supported by the seriell Interface?
Why, well here in Europe the speed of any modem is never .....and the Telco's are far from a flat-rate.

ISDN or CABELmodem and Linux

I guess you'll be able to find a cable modem that fits, because the cable modems usually connect themselves to an Ethernet board...
The downside is... Most ISP don't give you a static IP address and so it'll be harder to get your connection up and running. Check with the ISP first if they have support for Linux/Unix...
On the ISDN side, i guess the PCBIT boards (external thru serial or even internal) work ok with Linux...

There are some internal cards supported by linux.. one starting point could be http://www.muc.de/~hm/linux/linux-isdn.html
or http://www.linux-france.org/article/connex/ISDN/ (in French)

I can't speak for ISDN because I've never used one.

As for Cable Modems, I have a COM21 modem with service through AT&T @Home and it works great with Linux. It connects to a standard 10 or 10/100 Ethernet card. Initially I had trouble with DHCPbut that was due to signal strength not any hardware issue. This was no big deal because they set me up with a static address while they resolved the issue. Once AT&T fixed the problem DHCP worked fine. Best part is no special configuration, justsetup the network like normal and away you go.

As for USB, it will be supported starting in the 2.4 kernel, which should be released soon. They just released a test version last night so it's really close. However, you will still need to find drivers for your USB devices and that may take a little longer as the drivers need to be written. For common devices, like mice, you should be able to find drivers immediately. For less common devices, like scanners or cameras, you may have to wait a while or write them

If you go to www.redhat.com and search on ISDN, their Hardware Compatibility List has a number of supported modems.

In addition, nearly every type of cable modem can be supported. Cable modems will not generally use a serial interface because a serial interface will not support the necessary speed.

One other resource you might try is www.linuxrouter.org. The Linux Router Project has a number of active participants from Europe who have achieved broadband access using Linux with DSL, ISDN, cable modem and dialup.

It can be done!
