Not sure about this

I have led a very sheltered life but still I feel suspicious about this, is there any reason why you cannot ask your landlord?
If you want to set up an email account with his isp you will need to log on to his user account to do so.
If you just want to know which smtp server to use i'm sure he will tell you.

I posted my question on the internet because it was the weekend and the landlord was not available.

It will tell you what your public IP address is and who's network it's on. This will tell you who the ISP is when you punch in your IP into the whois database on I'm on Optimum Online, so I get the following info on arin:

Optimum Online (Cablevision Systems) CVISP (NET-69-112-0-0-1) -
Optimum Online (Cablevision Systems) OOL-CPE-WHPLNY-69-118-96-0-22 (NET-69-118-96-0-1) -
