Issue instaling Vista Windows Update Agent

By TechMel ·
I have 2 remote clients, both have Vista SP1 on Thinkpad T61 series. Both of them will not update/install Window Update Agent v7.2.6001.788; but with different error codes, 80070026 and 800f0900. System updates will not install, but Defender and Office 07 updates will install; go figure. MS articles/KBs, of course, have been helpless...

I have tried:
System restore (only one of them; the other waited too long to contact me so that it would matter)
Manual install of WUA
Rename or deleting the software dist. folder
Catroot2 trick
Registering the dlls
Using the Readiness Tool (947821) = useless
Renaming the WUA dll/exe files; rerun the manual install = just gave same install errors
Scannow/chkdsk = errors were found but chkdsk wouldn't run, even when marked dirty
Danced naked for the PC gods
Sacrificed a couple of chickens (yes I remembered to use the feet and blood to scribe on the PCs)

I am now stumped! Am I forgetting something? Not getting something? Would uninstalling SP1 do the trick? I am unable to use the AIK download install due to users being remote.
