IT career should be what type of?

i am M.A. in english lit. but wish to be IT professional. is this a day dream?

No, not necessarily. Much depends on why you are changing careers and what your goals are. Much also depends on what experience you have in the IT field.

Your question could be akin to asking if changing your profession to car mechanic is a daydream. On the face of it the answer would be no, but if you don't know the difference between a socket wrench and a crescent wrench, you would have a long, up-hill struggle.

Similarly, in the IT field, if computers have been your hobby for a number of years, anything is possible. But if you don't know the difference between an operating system and an application, or how to tell how much RAM is installed on a computer, you have a long, up-hill struggle.

Don't get me wrong. I'm not trying to talk you out of changing careers. The IT field can be quite challenging and enjoyable. I am trying to to get you to do a reality check in that if you are switching careers looking for instant employment with a large paycheck, and you have little or no experience, you will be sorely disappointed.
