Java Programming

By kal_lmn ·
Hi. I am currently enrolled in a programming class at a community college, and I need to compile java programs. The teacher said that we would just need JVM and Textpad. So I installed them both (JVM the 64 bit version), but I cannot compile and run the program to save my life. In the classroom, the keys to compile are ctrl+1 to compile/save, and ctrl+2 to run it.
Granted that I have a 64 bit vista machine, if I have all of the stuff is 64 bit versions, shouldn't it work? I have been digging around online and seen articles of other people compiling java on 64 bit machines. What am I doing wrong?
I installed JRE, JVM, JDK, and textpad.
A small tutorial or guide to a solution would be greatly appreciated.
