Joining an existing domain to an existing forest

Is it possible to join an existing domain to an existing forest? The forest I have setup has two domains within it, and I want to add an already established domain to this forest. Is there any way to do it other than creating a backup, doing dcpromo to remove it, then dcpromo again to promote it, and restoring the backup?
