The DC that's down probably holds the RID master FSMO role

by ManiacMan In reply to joining domain

You do know what FSMO roles are I hope? Bring that DC back up to transfer the RID master role from it to another DC. If the original DC holding the role crashed and will never be brought back online, perform a seizure of the FMSO role using NTDS utils.

Let me guess...

The DC that is down is the first DC that was created on your network?

If the role holder is down you nay have issues. Also if the XP box is pointing to the down server as it's primary DNS server you may see this.

The biggest issue you have here is that your AD is not healthy if one of the DCs is down.

I would try to get it back up or remove it from the mix before making changes to the domain.

2 DCs only 1 with DNS.

by CG IT In reply to Let me guess...

If the one with all the roles go down, you can't log in.

for redundancy, the second DC should have at the least, the Global catalog role and DNS. The global catalog role is required for users to authenticate with the DC and log in and DNS is required for AD to function.

As Bart said, you need to specify the second DC which is also the redundant DNS server in the DNS properties of TCP/IP or in DHCP so that clients can go to the second DC.
