jpg errors in Outlook

By jwgronner ·
jpg/jpeg files are corrupted when sent with Outlook 2000 and suing XP. I tried zipping them, sending to web mail - all to no avail. If I save as bmp files they are OK. The file associations are set up OK. I tried opening with PhotoShop and IE and MSPaint and none work. The porblem is also somewhat sporadic as some pictures "get through" just fine.

Talk about Wierd! But, that's Microsoft...
Two things. One is to check (you probably already have) the assignment for .jpg and .jpeg in "File Types".
The other is: Look in the registry under "HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.jpeg" and "...\.jpg".
If you don'tknow what the entries should be, try to find a system that's running OK and compare their keys with yours. You can (after backing up the registry, of course) delete those keys and import the working ones if they'r different or just copy the correct info.

I looked in the registry and found a .jpe, .jpeg and a .jpg folder, each with a subfolder named ShellEx and then a large alphanumeric in it as the default. Eg: {7376D660-C583-11d0-A3A5-00C04FD706EC} Is this the item to change??

The string you mentioned is widely different in my XP Pro. It may be different wherever.
One method is to back up (export to a file) each of the .jpg and .jpeg keys and then delete them.
After that, you have to re-define both in the "File Types" area of Explorer, tying them to the appropriate program(s).
Naturally, I would check these first so you can tie the extensions back to the same programs as in the original settings.
Remember to check all the settings before making any changes.

Since I gave you the string I have in my W2K machine, I guess it would be different. Would you give me the string value in your XP machine?
I would appreciate it.

Thanks,
John

OK, though I don't think it will do much good. It may not hurt to try them.
They follow:
.jpeg: {098f2470-bae0-11cd-b579-08002b30bfeb}

and .jpg: {098f2470-bae0-11cd-b579-08002b30bfeb}
Wadda y'know! They're both the same!
Luck,
Frank
