LAN = Local area Network, Local geographic location to other host on a single collision domain.

WAN = Wide Area Network, Dispersed geographic areas that are mostly on seperate collision domains.

Networks are classified by their geographic scope. LANs are situated in limited geography, for example in a building or school or office network. WANs are network that are connected to another network usually sitiuated in diffierent locations in theworld, like a state to another state, or a country to another country. One great example of this is the internet which is consider to be the largest network.
