LAN Network cable unplugged

by get2ak . Updated 18 years, 7 months ago

I have a Compaq Desktop PC with a XP home edition. I have a Linksys Router in my basement connected to the Cable modem. BHN cable connected to the modem, modem to the Linksys Router, Router to 1)Vonage phone 2)Wireless router 3)Desktop Cat5 connection running to the second floor.
My desktop when connected with a Cat5 cable, displays that the Network cable is unplugged. To test this, I connected my Laptop after disabling the wireless connection. The laptop works fine from the same wall connection. Then I took my desktop to the basement. I unplugged the router, wireless router and the cable modem. Restarted them all, starting with my cable modem, router and then the wireless router. Then I plugged the ethernet cable to my desktop and it worked fine. Can anyone tell why it does not work in the second floor? I have both MB connected ethernet adaptor and I bought a Linksys Ethernet adaptor. Both dont work.
