This is obviously a strange problem you have!

The first thing I would do automatically is update your antivirus (if you can't, assume you have a virus now), and run adaware with updates on your system. Now you can suspect that it's either a new spyware/virus on your system, or you are clean. If you have adware or viruses - clean them up (or post what you have as a comment and I'll help you out with this).

Now run Windows updates, and office updates. I don't know if I'd recommend putting on XP SP2 (if you are running XP), but get your office patches for sure. Now test if it works.

The third thing I would do is run Norton Systemworks on the laptop. Do the "Windoctor" scan on your registry. If you don't have it pop out to any computer or electronics store and pick it up, it's well worth the money just for the windoctor and speedisk components (just don't ever enable the real time scanning unless you want to put your laptop into slow motion).

Next, if this doesn't clean you up, completely uninstall Excel and probably office. Something is screwy with the program. Run a clean uninstall, reboot and re-run Norton Systemworks. Now re-install Excel. Now try it!
