This is probably a comn question but I haven’t found an answer. I have a Toshiba laptop running Win98se that will not shutdown or go into DOS mode. It used to occaisionaly do so, but now it always does this. It will shutdown from Safemode. This happened immediately after I attempted to upgrade Office 2000 from the Microsoft site. Everything seems to work except that it hangs on the “Windows is shutting down” screen and I have to press the reset button to regain control. I know that a program ordriver is not releasing the system but have not been able to find out which one. I have tried booting into confirmation mode, Microsoft’s shutdown trouble shooter, MSconfig, and all I get is that a program or driver is not releasing the system, or that VXD— caused an exception at XXXXXXXXXX. No names or clues. Karen’s shutdown program brings me to the Windows Logon screen. I am not opposed to reinstalling Office or Windows if I have to, but don’t want to lose settings. Also, doing this might treat the symptoms and get me working again, but it would not cure the disease. It might happen again if I can’t find out what caused this in the first place. Also, I can’t get my Backpack CD to work to fix Office. Windows recognizes it but will not read CDs. I have tried to uninstall the CD and reinstall it. All seems OK until trying to access the CD. When I uninstall it, it still appears under My Computer even though I uninstalled the software using the Control Panel and Windows device manager. Are these related or different problems?
