A couple of obvious points ...

#1 - "If i press restart while laptop is on , it restarts ok. If i put it to sleep , it will restart ok"

Neither of the above operations involve removing power from the device.

#2 - "But if i put it into hibernate or close down, i have to wait hours before i can switch it on again

Both of the above operations involve full removal of power from the device.

So, there is either something amiss with either the laptop battery pack, the laptop mains adaptor, or both.

How does the laptop behave on battery power alone?

How does it behave on AC mains power WITHOUT THE BATTERY?

laptop will not switch on

Thanks for your reply, With battery in and connected to mains I get green light on laptop indicating power, if i take battery out, there is no green light, so I am assuming it needs battery in for mains to work. When it starts on battery alone it works ok. This problem began with laptop not restarting for 5 mins each time i closed down/hibernated, now many hours before it will respond to start button, I have tried taking battery in and out ,holding down start key, reseating ram, nothing works , it just seems to take longer and longer before it will power up.

So what happens if you power up using the battery on its own, then once it gets going, you reconnect the mains lead?

If it were at all feasible, I'd suggest you try it with a replacement AC mains adaptor. If all else fails, try having it checked out by a qualified computer tech.

This definitely sounds like an AC mains electrical hardware problem.

Be careful when using your friend's adapter ! ...

by OldER Mycroft In reply to laptop wont power up

Best to check carefully - compare the output specs of both adapters.

If your friend's adapter is of a lower VOLTAGE or AMPERAGE then DO NOT USE IT.

I have an ACER laptop and know that they are not all the same in terms of AC adapters. Despite what you might think, if your friend's adapter is a LOWER output it can damage your laptop by placing too great a strain on it.
