Late undeliverable message notification

By stergios_nik ·
Hello.

One of my users sent an email to someone outside Company and he got an undeliverable notification after 2 days.

Is this normal? How can this happen? Why it took 2 days to have this undeliverable notification?

We are using an Exchange 5.5 SP4 Windows Server.

Thank you in advance.

This is the error message that I received, two days after the user sent the message.

Your message

To: someuser@somecompany.com
Subject: from me
Sent: Mon, 8 Mar 2004 15:13:04 +0200

did not reach the following recipient(s):

someuser@somecompany.com on Wed, 10 Mar 2004 15:10:20 +0200
network error during host resolution

Why it took 2 days to find out that the host does not exist?

Either your mail server or the outside mail server is attempting to deliver repeatedly to the given address. Most servers try for 2 days, then give up and send back the undeliverable notice.
Your users need to make sure they have addressed their messages correctly.
