Learning HTML

http://www.htmlhelp.com
is my personal favorite - they have the most thorough and easy-to-read reference for HTML 4.0. At the bottom of the page in the "Tools" section, there's a link to "Tutorials" where they link to at least 5 HTML tutorials.
By the way, if you see a tutorial for HTML 3.2, that's as good a place to start as 4.0; you can easily pick up on the new features of 4.0 later.

Another good resource is comp.infosystems.www.authoring.html newsgroup; look up the FAQ for that newsgroup first - it will link you to several tutorials. It's a great place to ask questions about stuff you don't understand or are having trouble with while going through the tutorials.

By the way, first lesson: HTML is markup, not programming. Folks in c.i.w.a.h will put your head on a pike for that mistake ;-).

Good luck.

Jay
