Linking two separate companies

By stacyben ·
The company I work for has joined forces with another company to manufacture and drop ship many of our products for us. Basically, we will handle all sales and some light manufacturing, and they will handle the more heavy manufacturing and ship and bill our customers directly, giving us a commission for the sales.

We of course still need to track these sales and keep track of order status on our end. The problem is they have their own accounting program (Kewill), and we have ours (Business Works). We have information in our system we do not want to necessarily share with them, and vice versa.

Currently, we are doing a lot of duplicate entry. We receive and enter an order, fax it to them, then they invoice, fax it to us, and then we generate an invoice for our system.

We need to find a way to intergrate our systems somehow. We would also like to offer electronic order for some of our larger customers that are already set up for that sort of thing to further simplify everything. I am looking for cost-effective suggestions. Can someone please offer me some advice on how this may be done? I've been looking into edi, a new accounting system entirely, online applications, etc. but am getting into areas I have no experience with. PLEASE, any advice??

Linking 2 companies

by ChrisMS In reply to Linking two separate comp ...

I have used EDI, it takes some setting up and working out, but when it works, it's the dogs n**ts.
As far as connecting the two offices/companies, I would suggest a Fixed line LAN/WAN, but set permissions for different areas of the servers to keep prying eyes out. I'm sure you know what I mean, however I will always provide more info if required.

Setup a common web based system

by ravid In reply to Linking two separate comp ...

which can provide the facility to enter orders, invoice etc and importantly specific exporting data functionality in the same which can be used by both companies to export the data which can be imported into your respective accounting systems. Thereby, you achieve the task of managing a control over the sales as well as not share information in the accounting systems.

If you need help building this system, we can help you create it.

Thanks for the suggestions

by stacyben In reply to Linking two separate comp ...

Thanks for the help. I've basically concluded the accounting program we have is just too underpowered for what we now need. It offers very little import / export options. Thanks for the advice ...the program we are looking in to ties well with edi and web-based applications.

Thanks! The people on this website are great!
