Training is free. Your best tool to learn Linux is the Linux Documentation project at: http://www.linuxdoc.org/. They have many documents in electronic book format along with howtos. If you go to http://ctdp.homestead.com/files/os/linux/index.html there are various resources available to help you get started including a users guide with section 9 about "Linux Help". Also if you look at the weblinks documentation section there are web links to several very useful sites including important GNU manuals.

In my experience, the BEST training is simply the following :

1. Get a PC that works reasonably well...
2. Purchase a distribution of Linux... I personally like Mandrake and Corel (Debian), but others are good also...
3. Install Linux (Corel, Mandrake, and Caldera all have decent installers... I'm not crazy about Redhat's, but that's personal preference)...
4. Get a reference such as "Dummies Guide to Linux"... Several other books are available.
5. Join a Linux User's Group (commonly referred to as LUGs). Most decent sized cities have one or two.
6. Play play play play... don't be afraid to **** it up... remember, if the machine is not your primary machine, you can always reload.

I prefer not to do training, but this is because I don't have the time. Between working 40-60 hours a week as a System Admin/Network Admin, and my families activities, who has time?
