Linux is an open source operating system.
Many of the open source application programs only run on Linux, or were written for Linux and ported over to Windows.

By definition, open source software is software where the code is made available for users to modify and share with the other users.

Generally, open source software is free but may be covered by license restrictions.

For the most part, open source software is user supported. There are forums for some of the more popular programs.

Linux itself has several variants:
Red Hat
to name but a few.
