Linux Certification: Training recommendation?

By al ·
I am considering learning Linux (and possible certification). Can anyone recommend a course/courses/schools, etc.?

compTIA Linux+

I suggest Linux+ (comptia.org) esp. if your starting out. Red Hat isn't my fav. ... I like Linux Mandrake.

i took and passed CompTIA's Linux+. it's a very poor exam. questions are worded badly. very low pass score. the cost is horendous. you learn literally nothing from the entire experience.

for the same amount of $$$, you can probably take 2 LPI exams - if you get them on discount - and LPI is much more recognized as a decent linux certification program/institution. the next best thing to RHCE.

also, in north america, RH is the most popular distro. it doesn't matter if you like mandrake or suse. you want to get certified in something that is worth something to put on your resume.

remember: certifications are "resume candy". stuff that's going to sell you to the HR filters and make them pick to interview you from the multitude of others. that's just about as far as it goes. it does not mean you know anything, you will get hired on the spot, or that you will be hired for a senior position.
