Linux hanging before logon prompt

By bmapfuwa ·
Linux running on a IBM computer is giving the following messages during bootup:

VFS mounted root (EXT2 Filesystems) read only
Change root old root d_count=1
Trying to unmount old root okay
Freeing unused kernel memory: 64k freed

After this the machine hangs. What can be done in this situation

Linux hanging before logon prompt

Usually this happens after a "hard" reboot (turning off the power switch). Restart the computer with the installation cd, press escape to get into pre-boot menu and type rescue. This will take you to a menu that allows you to reinstall the bootloader. It should solve the problem
