Is your /etc dir ok. More than likely there is a problem with your etc dir. both of those files reside in that dir. Please give more info also I.E. what where you doing when this happened. How are your partitions and mount points setup and do those files exhist or are you able to get to where you can see if they exhist.

Try entering 1 for single user mode if it asks again. This gives root privileges without networking functions so you can try to fix the problem. You may have a problem with your filesystem and expecially the /etc directory as mentioned in the previous comment.
Your inittab file should be in the /etc directory. It controls much about how your system boots.

If you cannot get into your system, I would recommend you do another Linux install on a free area of your hard drive, or on another drive installed on your system, then do a filesystem check to determine what problems may exist. Once you install the "parallel" system, you can mount the original system and rescue files you want to save. Partition Magic is a handy tool for making room to install another system if required.

If you need additional information, post a message or send an e-mail and I can send additional resource information.

Good luck.

Hi!

Instead of installing a paralell system, get root and boot disk for a slackware distribution and boot on them.

When you've done this you can mount your installation partitions after booting with thoose two disks. That way you can do checkdisk and do ls on the filesystem and so on.
