Linux is far faster than Windows. That’s old news. It’s why Linux runs 90 percent of the world’s top 500 fastest supercomputers, while Windows runs 1 percent of them.

Linux is definitely more reliable and faster than windows.
Reliable because it is less targeted by malicious users. There is a far less chance for your pc to be infected as compared to running windows which gets targeted a lot.
Also, Linux is open-source. You do not have to pay a dime.
It’s fun to use. You will get a chance to learn lots of interesting commands on different types of shells.
I would recommend starting out with Ubuntu or Linux Mint.

I’ii Share my experience.
The first time I installed linux, I was intrigued by the New kind Of UI. It was different from the windows UI. Linux is not difficult to understand, If you use a Desktop environment (Linux) similar to that of Windows’ like Cinnamon (for linux Mint), LXDE, LXQT. Yes, It will be difficult to get around these DEs too, but only initially. Through various tutorials (Youtube or not), you would learn to get around with these DEs.
And yes, Linux loads smoothly on my 12 year old desktop PC, even better than Windows XP does.
There is lot more to learn about Linux, just dive in.
Regards.-

The distributions found here all run very well on standard PC hardware (both desktops and laptops).
These distributions are free and can be downloaded as .iso image files.
ISO images need to be to burned to either a CD/DVD or USB flash drive (This can be accomplished with a tool like Unetbootin).
All of the Linux distributions you’ll find here can be run as “live” instances (which means you can boot the operating system from the CD/DVD or flash drive and run it directly from your computer’s RAM, without installing a single thing).

If you have an open mind, Linux is not difficult. I was in my fifties when I switched and am now 65. I totally use the GUI. If you are a power user, it will unlock more power if you take the time to learn the commands.
I would suggest you look at the website DistroWatch. It has a search function where you can put in your requirements and it will give you list of suitable OS’s to try. Things like desktop or server and beginner or high performance computing, gaming or media. I would suggest a Debian based OS, but that is a personnel opinion. If you prefer the traditional desktop Mate, Cinnamon, KDE and XFCE are all good choices. I personally recommend Ubuntu Mate and Zorin for new users. The amount of choice in Linux can be a bit overwhelming to a Windows user. -

Hello,
Linux has a reputation for being fast and smooth while Windows 10 is known to become slow and slow over time. Linux runs faster than Windows 8.1 and Windows 10 along with a modern desktop environment and qualities of the operating system while windows are slow on older hardware.

Hi there,
Differences Between Linux vs Windows 10. Linux is an open source operating system, that allows the users to apply their desired customization. Windows 10 is a paid product from Microsoft corporation, which has very limited customization options for the users. -

Linux is faster than W10 but for gaming I highly recommend a W10 VM for that just to get rid of the hassle of wine or proton or whatever. Linux isn’t necessarily difficult, you just have to know how to use a command line. Linux is the ultimate OS and the discussion of it goes on for ages. That’s the beauty of it.
You can do whatever you want and feel comfortable with, however don’t feel afraid to step out of your comfort zone, experiment, try new things and distros. Linux is meant to be customized and be unique for each user. Go wild with whatever you want, me personally, I settled on Arch but you don’t have to if you don’t feel good about installing an OS from the terminal. No matter what you use, it’s linux and that’s all that matters.

Best Linux Distros for Beginners. Ubuntu. Easy to use. Linux Mint. Familiar user interface with Windows. Zorin OS. Windows-like user interface. Elementary OS. macOS-inspired user interface. Linux Lite. Windows-like user interface. Manjaro Linux. Not an Ubuntu-based.
