Linux – Samba password problem

by trule . Updated 25 years, 5 months ago

We’ve got a linux box running Samba, atalk,
nfs, etc etc. for a catholic high school
(which means VERY limited time to fix things
!)

We were hacked 2 years ago. Before our
‘friend” attacked us, we could have students
use passwd to change their password, and it
would change their samba password as well.
Now, the two passwords are separate. Trying
to run smbpasswd gives an error

smbpasswd: machine 127.0.0.1 rejected the
session request. Error was : code 131.

So why is it trying to check with 127.0.0.1?
What can we do
