Locked Out: A Morning Mystery with My Laptop

    by brandy587northrop ·

This morning, I encountered a peculiar issue with my laptop. Despite entering the correct password, I was unable to access my account. Additionally, alternative login methods such as fingerprint recognition and PIN had vanished.

Thankfully, I managed to reset my password through a different admin account on the same laptop.

Could this have been a security breach?

Two plausible causes are mentioned in https://nl.ifixit.com/Answers/View/378801/Windows+10+says+password+is+incorrect+when+it+wakes+up+from+Sleep

      1. A Windows update pending
      2. Caps lock or num lock active.

      Hello, brandy

It’s good to hear that you were able to reset your password and regain access to your laptop. The issue you described could be due to various reasons, and while a security breach is a possibility, it’s more likely to be a system error or a glitch.

Problems with sign-in options not working correctly can sometimes occur due to misconfigured settings, a corrupt user profile, or running an outdated version of Windows. It’s also possible that certain system updates or changes might have temporarily disabled these options.

To ensure your laptop’s security, here are a few steps you can take:

Run a Full System Scan: Use your antivirus software to run a comprehensive scan of your system to check for any malware or security threats.
Check for Updates: Make sure your operating system and all software are up to date with the latest security patches and updates.
Review Sign-in Options: Go to your account settings and review the sign-in options available. Ensure that your preferred methods (like fingerprint recognition and PIN) are set up and functioning correctly.

Check System Logs: Look at the system logs to see if there were any unauthorized access attempts or system errors that could explain the sign-in issues.

I hope my suggestion is helpful for you.

      Best Regard,
      diana658hill

It’s possible that the disappearance of alternative login methods and the inability to access your account despite entering the correct password could be indicative of a security issue. However, it’s also possible that it was a technical glitch or a configuration error.

To determine if it was a security breach, consider the following:

Check for Unauthorized Access: Review your account activity logs or security event logs (if available) to see if there were any unauthorized login attempts or suspicious activities.

Scan for Malware: Conduct a thorough malware scan on your laptop to check for any malicious software that could have caused the issue or compromised your security.

Review System Settings: Ensure that your laptop’s security settings, including password policies and login methods, are configured correctly and haven’t been altered unintentionally.

Monitor for Further Issues: Keep an eye on your laptop for any further unusual behavior or security-related issues. If you notice anything suspicious, take appropriate action, such as changing passwords, updating security software, or seeking professional assistance.

Consider Two-Factor Authentication: Enable two-factor authentication (2FA) for your accounts, if available, to add an extra layer of security and mitigate the risk of unauthorized access.

      Hi @kees_b,

As you mentioned in the article :https://nl.ifixit.com/Answers/View/378801/Windows+10+says+password+is+incorrect+when+it+wakes+up+from+Sleep that it was the case of num lock, and caps lock, I also want to share that it can also happen because of downloading the pirated softwares. I happened to download filmora from a pirated website and I wasn’t able to log into my computer and I had to renew the whole window.
