Locked out of NT4

Hi,
The administrator and guest accounts are the default account you can try to use there account (if you have the password) and both account cannot be delete.
If you forget the password of administrator account than refer ther steps,. But be carefull by doing this all the other account will be deleted.
You can use a DOS or Windows 9x boot disk to boot the computer and then delete the SAM file in the c:\winnt\system32\config (default location)folder. (This file stores all users and their passwords defined on the local computer; if you delete it, you'll delete all local users with it.) After you restart the machine, you'll be able to use Administrator username with a blank password. NOTE: Remember that you'll lose all user accounts defined on this machine.

Hi,

you can also use NTaccess (http://www.sunbeltsoftware.com/product.cfm?id=265). You will need NT4 bootfloppies, though. This will not only allow you to reset the admin password, but also tell you what the built-in admin account is called, in case it has been renamed.

Hope this helps.

Kind regards,
Peter

Hi,

When you say locked out... do you mean forgot the administrator password? Or possibly username (if you've renamed it)?

Its not possible to have the administrator account "locked". Its the one account that cant become locked. It can be renamed but it cant be gotten rid of.

If its your account (presumably with admin privs) then yes, it could get locked out.

There are better, less destructive ways to break into a server other than those suggested already - but is that what you want?

Let me know.

Cheers,
Tim.

The administrator password is now unknown and is the only one able to log onto server. So i need a way of opening the server without loss of other data. i dont mind losing other accounts that use the network

Hi,

OK, here are two extracts from a previous TechRepublic article - read my comments below before proceeding.

This is the one that was accepted. It may not apply to you, though...

"
If the server is still on a domain and you have domain admin rights, you can change the local admin password from a command line, using:

net user Administrator <newpassword>
"

The other answer follows... There are some simplifying mods below...

"
This problem has a simple solution. If you do not have the domain administrator password, there is still a solution.
1. Re-install NT into a DIFFERENT directory. I assume that the current installation is c:\winnt. Install into a DIFFERENT dirrectory (this is VERY important. You are keeping your current installation SAFE, but installing a new version to a different directory.
2. You will give an administrator a new password in the new installation.
3. boot your computer to the NEW installation of NT. (do not worry about drivers, software, etc. you will not need them)
4. When at the desktop of the NEW installation, open the following folder c:\winnt\system32
5. rename the file LOGON.SCR to LOGON.BAK
6. rename the file usrmgr.exe to LOGON.SCR (sounds crazy, but this really works)
7. Shut down and re-boot to the ORIGINAL installation of NT.
8. Get to the logon screen, and leave it alone for about 20 minutes.
9. What will happen, is the logon.scr screen saver will activate, and you will have the user manager on the screen.
10. Find the administrator user, and change the password to what you want.
11. Shut down and reboot to the ORIGINAL NT.
12. at the logon screen, log in as administrator.
13. DO NOT FORGET to rename the files listed above, back to their original names.
This really works, even on a domain controller. I have done it several times and it works fine.

Rather than install WinNT again, you can simply pull the disk and put it into another NT machine, or Win2K or anything capable of writing to NTFS.

Go from step4. I think Step 4 is meant to read OLD installation by the way... I'm sure you get the idea, though.

Hope this helps,
Cheers,
Tim.

Oh, I feel I should add, the first answer isn't as easy as it sounds re: losing the SAM.

Firstly you cant use a 98 boot disk because it wont be able to read your NTFS partition let alone write to it...

Secondly losing the SAM means you lose all ownerships and protections throughout your system. That may be more trouble than its worth to you - you may as well pull the disk put it in another machine and simply copy your valuable data off that way.

Cheers,
Tim.

I installed a temporary NT4 in a different folder and successfully deleted the old SAM file. How do I uninstall the temporary NT4 from the computer?
