LONDON BOMBING, OFF-TOPIC THREADS DOMINATE

Between the July 4th holiday and the London terror attacks, it was an
unconventional week here at TechRepublic. As is to be expected, the
London bombings dominated the online discourse, and we elected not to
suppress this "off-topic" thread, given the circumstances. A number of
tags attached to this discussion have also appeared in several blogs,
so be sure to use them to keep up with the events and opinions
surrounding the London tragedy.

On the subject of "off topic," we've been kicking around the idea of
doing a "weekend edition" TechRepublic newsletter, which would showcase
all the non-tech discussions that are normally relegated to the "Too
Hot for TR" list, and augment it with gadget reviews, non-tech links,
and other ancillary content that doesn't directly relate to IT, but is
still pretty cool. We'd probably create a designated tag that would let
users flag content they want considered for the new mail. If this
sounds cool to you--or it sounds like the worst idea ever-- post your
thoughts in this discussion.

Now, on to the main event. This week, instead of our usual content,
we're taking a look back at the Top 25 most-active threads in
TechRepublic history. Those threads that have been suppressed are noted
with an asterisk. One look at this list and you'll begin to understand
why off-topic content may merit its own newsletter. I've also broken
out the list into a few categories and included the all-time Technical
Q&A Top 10 in my blog. Links to the specific entries are listed below.

Good Idea

by TheChas In reply to London bombing, off-topic ...

I like the idea of a weekend newsletter.

Of course, that just provides further evidence that I do not have a life.

Not that we should revisit them, but there was at least one thread that became way to hot for TR.

I'm referring to the thread that GuroOfDOS started with a statistical compilation of 1 month of sexual enhancement SPAM.

I only wish I had saved a copy of that thread before it got out of hand and was pulled.

Maybe there is an arcive that could be replaced?

by jdclyde In reply to Good Idea

As we are (most of us anyways) responsible adults, it would be interesting to read this. I missed it the first time around.

Even if it is an obscure link, only gotten to from a newsletter link?

Off-topic tag

by jdclyde In reply to London bombing, off-topic ...

if there was a list of recommended tags for certain topics it would be much eaiser for a standard to arise and make it even easier to use?

I think it is a great idea.

Miscellaneous Discussions on TR

by Black Panther In reply to London bombing, off-topic ...

In a way... they are all remotely related to IT. The medium itself that is used to communicate and discuss these issues is the Information Superhighway ( IT) :)

Have a separate category for these discussions ( with a disclaimer ) for those that enjoy a non technical related discussion.

Also remember that these discussions may help attract people to other technical discussions.

Have a nice day!
