Can a default value be set from a query and maintain the list values?

I can think of two possibilities

I remember that if you set the text property, it will auto select that item in the list at run time, but only if you load the list in the initialize event or if it is bound to a database.
Otherwise, it needs to be done in code

me.lstList.text="Default Value"
