loss of drives

i have been looking at a pc with windows me installed, they had moved the pc from one room to another and when they put it back together the d drive and e drive cd rom + dvd dissapeared i checked all the cables checked that they were recognised inbios and they were but they havent been allocated a drive letter there not in my computer. the dvd drive is visible in device manager but says there is a problem but the cd rom isnt visible ive seemingly done everything i can i just dont understand can anyone help.
