    Lotus Notes 4.5

    Locked

    by alxvigo ·

Over the weekend my Lotus Notes server crashed. Bad hard disk of course, but I had a back up from the previous Friday. I was able to restore everithing on the dead hard drive to the new one but when I restarted notes services in Windows NT the LotusNotes server asked me to enter the password for the server.id which I don’t know. Is there a way to reset the password?

Thanks for all the help I can get.

No, your pw cryptates the server.id file. There is no backdoor. Fortunatly there is no lockout, so you can try infinitive times, unfortunatly the machine will think a little longer for each try.
I recomend: Use your cert.id to produce another server.id with the same distinguished name. Set your server up as a new server. When the server has the same name as the old, the ACLs should work

Creating a new server ID won’t work unfortunately (think how easy it would be to get around security).
The password system is designed to create an increasing large pause between incorrect tries (to prevent dictionary hacking).
You presumably havea backup copy of all IDs (don’t you). What you will need to do is recertify your backup copy, and set the password to zero length (servers ids shouldn’t have passwords as they won’t be able to auto start, and they should (!!) be in secure environments, and NT should be locked (minor security lecture over!) If you managed a restore, then you can get the ID from there to recertify, and set to 0 password length. Let me know if you continue with problems….
