mail compression

My Outlook Express (6.00.2900.2180 under Windows Xp home edition 2004 microsoft Corp.), without control on my part, starts every once in a while, a compression procedure of the Email. In doing so it takes possession of most of the computer resources. How is it possible to start the compression procedure only on request?
