Mail Format tab

By derek.shotwell ·
I?ve had this strange behavior in my Outlook 2003 for some time and cannot resolve it. I have repaired, uninstalled and reinstalled three times and updated services packs and such on my Outlook 2003 to no avail. I can click on the buttons (Internet Format?, International Options?, etc.) without issue. However, when I select any drop down box, Outlook freezes and then errors with a Send Report. I am unable to add/change my signature or the message format. When I install this copy on a test computer the behavior does not present itself, it runs fine. (I have since uninstalled this copy from the test computer). Does anyone have any advice on some corrective action as nothing has been effective in resolving my issue. I even tried replacing the comctl.dll file but that accomplished nothing.

I am not certain, but lately I have found that a corrupt profile on the machine may cause an issue. Try uninstalling MS Office including Outlook. Create a new user profile on your machine and then re-install Office and Outlook.

I was told that was how tech support at work fixed my machine. Good Luck.

I wanted to add clarification to J.Lupo's answer. I wasnt sure when you said you have done that wether you meant uninstalled Office and re-installed or if you meant your profile. Ive often find errors such as this are particularly in the profile. If you login to the PC as the Administrator, go to Documents and Settings, Delete you normal login's directory (name of the directory should show as your Login ID). Logout of the Admin and then re-login as your normal it should result in re-building the default profile from the machine name. You can also try this if you have another user to login (for the 1st time) on that machine and see if outlook behaves the same for them since they will have a clean build of thier profile.
If this doesnt work, I suggest re-installing the windows version as well especially if this happens in other applications such as IE.
Does this machine have any other communications installed (outlook express, Instant Messaging, etc. Maybe you have a conflict or a corrupted file from one of them.

Senior, we tried your suggestion, but it still didn't resolve the problem. Since the software loaded on this PC was installed via a Ghost image, we're just going to bite the bullet and reinstall the whole system. I haven't been able to reproduce the issue on any other test machines, so it has to be some software conflict from that image that was used.

Thanks for all the replies!
