Mail merging in Office 2000 documents

Doing a mailmerge using Word 2000. My datasource is an excel spreadsheet and I’m doing the whole thing and when I’m merging the document it puts in the mergefields as bold. I’ve checked and in my main document the fields are definitely not bold. Thefields in the spreadsheet is also not bold. Is there some way that it’s getting the formatting from somewhere else?
