Mail stuck in outbox

By jon ·
I have a client with 5 systems on peer to peer network running windows xp pro/home and office 2000/xp/2003.
We have an intermittent problem.
When an email is sent with an attachment it sometimes remains in the outbox, but is sent, and received by the recipient every time outlook sends/receives. The mail in the outbox cannot be deleted or moved without going into safe mode.
This has been happening on one system only for the past 7 days, but today all 5 systems are suffering the same fate.
It does not happen every time. I have sent test mails in plain text, html with and without picture/doc attachments but can never relicate the problem on demand.
I have contacted the isp and have been told that it cannot be a mail server problem as ther mail server would issue an error which it has not.
I have followed the microsoft articles relating to stuck mail e.g turn off virus scanning, recreate new profile etc to no avail.
This is quite an urgent problem as the company is receiving threats to have its mail blocked from its clients servers
Thanks
Regards
Jon

What Service Packs have been applied to the OS and Office?

What hot fixes have been installed?

If you uninstall Office totally and reinstall, does the issue cease?

Have you scanned these systems for malware?

sounds like you have a virus, go here

http://www.pandasoftware.com/products/activescan.htm

and check. Also download the latest patches from MS for all your systems.

Since this has now transfered to the entire network I would be looking for a Virus for Male ware infection.

Update your AV & Spy Ware products and then reboot into safe mode and run the scans to make sure that you have clean systems.

Lets know how you get on.

All Windows and Office updates have been installed. Bullguard anti virus is installed on all 5 systems, scans every day and has reported no infections. Spyware Doctor is installed on all machines and again is run daily and all systems are clean.
I intended to re-install office on the machine that had the problem, but was then told all 5 systems were experiencing the same problems but to a lesser extent.
I have contacted the isp to see if there may be a mail server issue but have been told there is not.
I will re-install office on all machines if i have to. I just find it hard to accept that systems that have worked fine for the past 2 years would all suffer the same problem in a short period of time.
As far as a virus is concerned, Bullguard is saying they are clean, even so I would expect a virus to be mass mailing, not interfering with the occasional legitimate mail?
Thanks for your continuing efforts.

Problem appears to have been with malware detected and removed with Spyware Doctor. Thanks to all for your help. Much appreciated. Regards
Jon
