Make a software RAID on Solaris 9

By cp409sd ·
I have a Solaris 9 server that I would like to create a software RAID 5 on. I had always thought that the tool to do this was Solstice DiskSuite. I have been reading about Solaris Volume Manager though. They seem like similar products. I am confused about which will allow me to make a RAID 5 out of my existing install.

Could someone please tell me some of the differences between these two products. Also, if someone knows of any How-to's out there for whichever product that I need, I would appreciate it if you could let me know. Thanks.

Make a software RAID on Solaris 9

Correct me if I am wrong.

Solaris Volume Manager that shipped with Solaris 9 is the same as Solstice DiskSuite. For earlier version of solaris, 8 and below, DiskSuite need to be either purchased or downloaded from sun.com. When Solaris 9 was released, I guess they decided to integrate it into the distribution.

As far as I know, both of this product do not allow you to configure a RAID5 drive on any existing installation.

Here are some document that might help. Personally I find that the Disksuite guide is more step by step guide.

I used Disksuite and follow the guide. Configure a Solaris 8 - E250R with a mirror and a RAID 5 configuration.

DiskSuite
http://docs.sun.com/db/doc/805-5961?q=DiskSuite
Solaris Volume Manager
http://docs.sun.com/db/doc/806-6111?q=Solaris+Volume+Manager

By the way ... the command for DiskSuite and Solaris Volume Manager is almost identical.

Sorry...forgot about this question. Thanks to all for the info. I ended up setting up a RAID 10 array.

They are the same products, the only difference is that Solaris Volme Manager is now a Sun Product, and not a third party that is sell by Sun.
You should be able to use Solaris Volume Manager as Solstice Disksuite, just start the Graphic interface and create a new volume, then apply the RAID that you want in top of that volume and that's all!!

And it's possible to setup raid/mirror on existing disk...
