marriage chain

Imagine a sophont species with two sexes. A middle-aged man marries a young woman, grows old, then dies. His now middle-aged widow marries a young man, grows old and dies. The widower... well, you get the idea. In this species, property and so forth is inherited down the marriage chain rather than parent-to-child. The people can fly. Who invented this world, and what books has she written?

I read two stories about this species during the early 1990s, both, I think, in the same pink-covered book, a collection of stories by female science-fiction writers. In the first story, an aging husband loses his wife to death and then dies himself. The second, set in a later age, has the species, or part of it, in interstellar flight, losing its marriage-chain culture.
