Mass File Type Associtation Changing

By James Goerke ·
I have a client who has about 600 MB of word and excel documents that somehow got changed to all read only after a backup restore. I was wondering if there was a utility available to change all the file types of all the files in a specific folder all at once. Thanks.

Hi,
There's a util built in to the operating system for this, known as attrib - you can get help on it by typing attrib /? at the command line. To change all the files in a folder, from the command line go to the folder, and run

attrib -R *.*

Simple as that !!

There are numerous file utilities to do this if you do not wish to use the command line, or have problems.

Search through the file and CD utilities at www.nonags.com

You can also use Z-Tree. It has a very good built in attribute changer.

Hi James

When files are backed up to CD they are automatically given read-only status. Therefore, when they are restored they will have the read-only attribute enabled. To turn off the read-only attribute, select all the restored files by pressing CTRL+A and either right click the selection and select Properties or click the Properties icon on the toolbar. The resulting dialog box will contain an Attributes section. Here you can enable or disable all attributes.

The only drawback with this is that you can only change the attributes of files within one folder at a time.

Good luck
