Maxtor Ultra ATA 133 60GB as 3d HD

Physically installed HD, get black screen, with intermittent screens on boot-up attempt. SOYO BA+III MB P III @ 733, Award Modular BIOSv.4.51PG.
1. Do I need to install W98SE (per Maxtor box W98 can only handles HDs to 33GB, while SE OK to 133)?
2. If so, can I install W98SE over W98 without losing my other programs?
3. Is there a limitation re my BIOS and if so, how do I change it?
