ME doesn't share resources w/XP Home

By maggyver ·
Recently installed an XP Home PC in an existing peer-to-peer home network with 2 ME PCs. Found that XP's resources could be shared to the ME machines, but could not get the ME machines' resources to be seen, no matter what I tried. Further confirmedit was an ME problem by hooking up a Win2000 Pro laptop in the same manner and was able to see its resources in XP.
I spent a considerable amount of time with tech support from the OEM (Sony) and they concluded that it must be some kind of shortcoming within ME. The client has resolved to upgrade the ME machine to XP Home for the purpose of sharing resources, but in the meantime I wondered if any of you illustrious fellow techs had come across anything like this and have any feedback to add. If this is in fact true, Microsoft stands to lose face if their two most current home OS's can't network properly.

Uhh...yes. Of course. XP's resources were able to be shared to ME, thru TCP/IP. XP had full Internet access, thru TCP/IP. Sorry if I didn't make that clear. All parts of home network were functioning using TCP/IP, except for sharing ME's resources on XP.

I'm not actually answering your question. I just wanted to say that I have got the same problem on my network. Maybe it is a shortcoming of winME?? Check microsoft web site updates maybe.

Thanks for the feedback. Even just knowing that others are experiencing the same thing lends itself to the notion that this is in fact an ME shortcoming. I will indeed watch the MS update site, but I'm also hoping for some fabulous workaround which doesn't come from the official MS channel.

I found an answer that worked for my network. Deisable the build in XP firewall. For details go to:

Don't forget to remove the spaces!

Sorry, I miss understood your question. The above URL won't provide a solution to your problem. Tell me if you find a work around though.

go to the network control panel, double click on the TCP/IP - > (ethernet card), select bindings and make sure the ME machines have check marks for file and printer sharing. I was driven absolutely crazy by the same thing a few days ago.

good luck
