By spensys ·
There is a know problem with a Windows 98 memory leak when a .wav file is played. I just can't locate the appropriate fix on their web site.

Memory loss with .wav files under WIN98

Hi
See article Q242937 (http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q242/9/37.ASP?LN=EN-US&SD=gn&FR=0) for information about windows 98 driver model audio update. Among other things it looks at the following issue... "Programs that use PCI Audio Wave devices in full-duplex mode may elicit a system memory leak of 64 bytes each time an audio stream is created, or its properties are programmatically examined." It goes on to say the fix is not in the public domain and you should contact microsoft only if you are experiencing the specific problems mentioned in the document.
Hope this helps.
Pete

I guess Pete sort of re-stated my problem without an answer. I did contact Microsoft and (3 weeks later) I still haven't heard from them.

Find a tiny click sound, set it on the desktop and when a problem comes up select properties, preview, then close, this will clear out the cache and memory, you can automate it if you like to write string commands ,but just leave it on the desktop touse when you have a problem . Luck

Thanks to kgosnell for his/her answer. I have to question why, if the execution of a sound is causing my memory loss, the execution of another sound will "clear the cache" and return memory to me???

If you are still tackling this problem, perhaps you should consider calling your local super-hero.
