Merge with multiple related records

When using a Word merge with data from a non-MSOffice database, how does one "join" multiple records of same "person". Example, the database pulls the data for one person's account with one records per fund (some people may have 5 to 10 listings). This makes each fund appear as a record in the merge, but the desire is to have the merge produce one letter per person. Currently, there is a lot of hand-editing to merge the fields of each person's records so that there is only one record per person. This is not only time consuming but can lead to error. Is there a better way to join these together. (The database cannot do this for the data file.)
