Merging Excel-XP numbers into Word-XP

By shepler ·
I use Excel for detail accounting and have multiple merge reports in Word. I just got a new machine which came with Office XP. Now when I use the merge, my Word document doesn't keep the number format from the Excel file. For example, if the calculated Excel number is 10,000.00 (in this exact format), Word shows it as 10000. Office 2000 didn't do this. Also if the calculated Excel number is 9,638.24, Word shows it as 9638.2333343. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Word 2002 communicates with Excel differently than previous versions. It is looking at the number itself, rather than the displayed data. You could format the Excel data as text and included the formatting (not a good choice) or you can add a formatting switch to the Word field:

{ MERGEFIELD Total\#",$#.00;(,$#.00)"}

Another way is to go to Tools>Options and choose "Confirm conversions on open" on the General tab.
Then when you are asked to choose a connection method, pick DDE.

Things were simpler in the old days .... oops, that was yesterday! (:')
