Through the Internet Mail Service, we set the default size for incoming and outgoing messages to 5MB. Now if we set individual mailbox incoming and outgoing messages sizes to a different value (1MB) through the Limits tab in Microsoft Exchange Administrator, which one would take precedence?

In addition, is there a way to block all attachments to a particular user and to retrieve those blocked attachments from the Exchange Server? (or are they just returned to the user)

Thanks,
Dan

The 5mb limitation on the IMS will block all messages with attachments of 5mb or greater from being transported across its queues (inbound and outbound).

The 1mb placed on the Mailbox will prevent all messages which exceed 1mb from that mailbox (includes internally sent mesages, messages from the IMS and any messages or data that the user trys to add to the mailbox him/herself such as in the draft, journal, tasks, calendar, etc.)

To block attachments for a particular user you will need to:

1. upgrade the clients to Outlook 98/2000 or XP and use Microsofts Security update with the AdminPack.

2. use a 3rd party tool that will allow the blocking of attachments at the store level (NEMX: Exchange Power Tools for example - www.nemx.com)
