I am not sure if this is the correct forum for this question but I'm going to go for it anyway. If I access my hotmail or yahoo accounts from my computer at work can the network administrator retrieve copies of those messages I either sent or received?

I guess u should not be asking this question, 'coz this is something that administrators are supposed to know. Nevertheless, i would say that its possible if you r getting your mails downloaded on your pc.
I hope u dont ask further...on how!
Cheers.

I am not an administrator, just a helpdesk support tech so I don't know a lot about what should or shouldn't be known.

No, the only way they would have that information would be through something like a screen capture, or other "questionable" means. As far as sent and recieved e-mail, this is all just on the web site and is really no different than any other site you may view.

So, unless they are really playing "big brother" by doing screen and/or keystroke captures, you should be fine. But, general rule of thumb is to never do anything on a work computer that you would feel uncomfortable with someone else in your organization seeing.

Actually, they CAN look at your received mail simply by looking in your web cache (since Hotmail and Yahoo both serve mail via HTML). Your sent mail is typed into a form so it would not be cached. Clear your cache and history daily if you're worriedabout it.
