Messages disappearing in OE on Win 2000

I have a client whose e-mails in custom folders and the inbox are periodically disappearing at seemingly random intervals. The custom folders also are removed and the inbox is reset with Welcome to Outlook Express message for the current date. Theclient is using Windows 2000 and Outlook Express 5.50 and McAfee Virus Scan. This client also has three other workstations with the same configuration, two of which have never experienced this problem and one which has not experienced it since updating the McAfee Application in December.

One thing you can look at is this. Go to the View Menu, and down to Current View. There are several options that can be selected, including:

Show All Messages

Hide Read Messages

Hide Read and Ignored Messagges

There are more options in that menu. Have them select the Show all Messages.

.
.
Another possibility:

I've seen reference to a "bug" that causes folders in Outlook Express to disappear when the client accesses a HotMail account.

Look at this site:

About half way down the page is the full explanation, possible resolutions, and additional links.

There appears to be a problem with e-mail scanning, Auto update, OE, and W2K.

If you are using McAfee, especially on Win2000, turn off Email Scan and auto update.

This from Symantec:
"If you disable email protection, is your computer still safe from email viruses?
Disabling email protection does not leave you vulnerable to viruses and malicious software in email. It is a separate layer of protection in addition to Auto-Protect. Auto-Protect scans any incoming files, including email, as they are saved to your hard drive. As long as you keep your virus definitions up to date with LiveUpdate, and keep Auto-Protect enabled and set to scan files as they are created or downloaded, your system is fully protected."
