Depends

on what you need to do. If you have other servers and don't mind migrating the data/apps, build a clean Win2k box.

If you are trying to upgrade a domain to Win2k though, you need to upgrade the NT4 PDC to Windows 2000 regardless.

BTW, go to Windows 2003 and forget 2k. This will save you from having to do a 2k->2k3 upgrade later.

NT -> 2K3

by kmlong_az In reply to Depends

I'll second Malcom's commments. You should just go directly to Server 2003. I'm still running a Windows NT 4 domain, but I'm preparing for migration to Windows Server 2003. I'm just trying to decide whether or not to migrate or upgrade.

Migrating NT to Windows 2k server

Depends on how much stuff there is on the NT4 jobby. You can upgrade, but as with all things Windows, expect the worst and hope for the best.

The nerdy admins will say, plan, plan plan. I say run a test and if it looks cool, back up everything including your bank account and do an upgrade. If you are the nervous type, either install fresh and copy/transfer the booty, or...

get someone else to do it.
