Migration from Child Domain to an independent Active Directory Forest

By mike.playboy ·
Brief layout: Our current infrastructure is a child domain that depends on the parent domain (root). Also, our internet connection is through the parent's leased line and we need to play by their rules.

parent= root.local
child= office.root.local
me=Domain Admin of 100 users and computers

I am running into all sorts of security issues depending on the parent domain for everything that requires Ent admin rights (modification of schema)
I hate not having enterprise admin rights to do my job so what I would like to do is migrate all user accounts and Exchange mailboxes to a brand new forest/domain and leasing our own Internet connection to make us totally independent.

I was wondering if anyone has done anything remotely close to this and if possible provide me with a brief "lessons learned" or warnings or road blocks that we should expect? This project is in the infant stages and I'm gathering data and setting a date for 2009. Feel free to post details!!!
