Migration of 5.5 Exchange Public Folders

By InXale ·
Scenario.

We have a 5.5 Exchange mail server which shares public folders with three remote sites.
We have been informed that our 5.5 server will be migrated to another site /organisation which contains a 2000 exchange server. Leaving the three remote sites in the old organisation.
We are not duly concerned with the migration of the mailboxes but have some concern how the public folders will migrate.
We cannot have any downtime of the public folders because all sites are international with different time zones.

Question(s)

1. Is there a piece of software that will allow the migration of public folders between different mail organisations?
2. If no software is available , what is the best way to proceed?
3. Are there any other best practices?

Rgds..

2 good places to start:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/treeview/default.asp?url=/technet/itsolutions/guide/default.asp
and
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/exchange/exchange2000/deploy/upgrdmigrate/6STEPAP.ASP

Try and remember when utilizing the ADC the Public Folders will be the first items synched. You will need to use the ADC to replicate the Public Folder names into the AD before you attempt to deploy E2k servers.
Also, follow the 6 step migration, and if you're trying to Migrate over Exchg5.5 from one server to a new Exchg2k server while keeping the same organization, install ADC, install E2K server into 5.5 Org (same site) and then run moveuser.

I should also mention, Article Q316886 is intended to cover the steps to migrate from Exchange 5.5 to Exchange 2000 by having Exchange 2000 join the existing 5.5 site. By joining you will have the ability to use Move Mailbox and rehome the Public Folders via replication.

If the servers are in separate Orgs then really the only option is to export the folders to a PST through a MAPI client and then import them into the Exchange 2000 server.

Between seperate Exchange Orgs then the options to migrate mailboxes are the Migration Wizard or Exmerge.

Many Thx compgirlfhredi. You have answered what we thought we had to do. Was really clutching at straws hoping there was a 'get out of prison ' card. :-(
